Kokoda Initiative (Owen Stanley Ranges, Brown River Catchment & Kokoda Track Region)
The Papua New Guinea and Australian governments are committed to working together on the sustainable development of the Owen Stanley Ranges, Brown River Catchment and Kokoda Track Region and the protection of its special natural, cultural and historic values. The first Joint Understanding between PNG and Australia was signed in 2008 and a Second Joint Understanding was signed in July 2010. The program of work under the Joint Understanding is delivered through the Kokoda Initiative. The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is Papua New Guinea’s lead agency for delivery of the Kokoda Initiative and Chairs the PNG Kokoda Taskforce.

Coral Triangle Initiative
The 5.7 million km2 of the Coral Triangle is home to the highest diversity of marine life on earth. The Coral Triangle is recognized as an area of global significance, blessed with over 75% of known coral species, over 30% of the world’s coral reefs, over 3,000 species of fish and the greatest extent of mangrove forest of any region in the world. This region stretches across six countries: Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. These groups are also known as the CT6. In Papua New Guinea the Department of Environment & Conservation (DEC) is the led cordinating agency to this initiative backed up by the Fisheries and Foreign Affairs Departments.
